A Home-Cooked Chengdu Day — Cooking and Eating with a Local Family
Duration
4–5 hours
Transport
Public transport
Step into a real Chengdu home and experience Chinese cooking not as a demonstration, but as part of everyday family life.
This experience takes place inside a local host’s home, where cooking is not an “activity” but a daily rhythm — preparing simple dishes, sharing food, and spending time together around the kitchen and dining table.
We’ll meet in the city and head to the host’s home together. Once you arrive, you’re not entering a staged kitchen or a studio — you’re entering someone’s actual living space.
What to expect
- Cooking together, not watchingIn the kitchen, you’ll join your host in preparing a few home-style Chinese dishes that locals actually cook on a regular day. Depending on the season and what’s available, this may include simple stir-fried vegetables, tofu dishes, seasonal soups, or classic Sichuan home flavors. You’ll be involved in the process step by step — washing, cutting, seasoning, and cooking — while your host casually explains how Chinese home cooking is structured around balance, timing, and shared meals rather than strict recipes. There is no formal “class structure.” It feels more like cooking alongside a family member.
- Eat like a local familyOnce the food is ready, we’ll sit down together and enjoy the meal at the same table. Chinese home dining is naturally shared — dishes are placed in the center, conversations flow freely, and eating is slow and social rather than individual or formal. This is often the most memorable part of the experience: not the cooking itself, but the feeling of being part of a real household moment, even briefly.
- Conversations beyond foodDuring and after the meal, you’re welcome to talk with your host about daily life in Chengdu — how people shop, cook, eat, and live in the city, and how home cooking still plays an important role in everyday routines. The conversation is informal and open, shaped by curiosity rather than structure.
