Detian — The Waterfall That Belongs to Two Countries

Detian is the largest transnational waterfall in Asia and one of a very small number anywhere that a national border runs directly through.

The Guichun river drops over a limestone step in three main tiers, roughly 200 metres wide and around 70 metres high, in a bowl of karst peaks. The Chinese side calls it Detian; the Vietnamese side, Ban Gioc. It’s the same water.

What visiting is like

The Chinese side, in Daxin county of Chongzuo prefecture, has the developed infrastructure: viewing platforms at several heights, a path up beside the falls, a lift, and bamboo rafts that take you right into the spray at the base. It’s well organised and it works — you can see the whole thing from a distance and then be soaked by it.

The base is the good bit. At full flow the noise is genuinely loud and the mist reaches a long way, which is why the karst peaks around it are dense green.

The border

The most interesting five minutes here isn’t the waterfall.

A short walk from the falls stands border marker 53, a French colonial-era stone from the 1890s, when Vietnam was Tonkin. You can stand next to it with one country on either hand. There’s usually a small informal market at the boundary where Vietnamese traders sell coffee, cashews, dried fruit and tobacco to Chinese day visitors, conducted across a line neither side is crossing.

At various times a cross-border tourist zone has operated here, allowing regulated day trips onto the Vietnamese side. Whether it’s running when you visit is worth checking locally — and see restricted areas for the general position on China’s border zones.

When to go

Flow is everything. Come in the dry season — roughly November to March — and you’ll see a respectable waterfall over a lot of exposed rock.

Come between June and September, after the summer rains, and it’s a wall of water across the entire width. The trade-off is heat, humidity and the risk of the platforms being closed after very heavy rain.

Late September and October is the compromise: still high flow, less oppressive weather.

The Zhuang country around it

This is Zhuang territory — Guangxi is their autonomous region and the largest ethnic minority population in China. Villages around Daxin farm sugarcane and rice between the karst towers, and the county markets are worth timing a morning around.

Two hours away, the Mingshi river valley is often described as a miniature Guilin and is much quieter — bamboo, buffalo, and a river through the peaks. Worth adding a night for.

Practical notes

Getting there: Nanning is the base — high-speed rail from Guangzhou and Guilin — and Detian is around three hours by road. Day tours run; staying near the falls or at Mingshi is better.

Tickets: scenic area entry plus separate charges for the lift and the rafts.

Nearby: Dongxing on the coastal end of the same border, and Yangshuo north for the karst on a larger scale.
