Guilin and Yangshuo are the most famous landscape in China and they earn it. The trick is knowing which river, which village and which hour — the difference between a coach park and an empty valley is about six kilometres.
This is the landscape on the back of the 20-yuan note, in every ink painting of China, and in the tourist brochure of every operator on the continent. It is also, genuinely, as good as advertised: limestone towers rising 100 to 200 metres out of flat paddy, a green river winding between them, and morning mist that separates the peaks into layers.
The problem isn’t the scenery. It’s that four million other people had the same idea, and where you stand determines everything.
The geology, briefly
Two hundred million years of limestone, laid down as a shallow sea bed, then uplifted and dissolved by warm acidic rain along vertical joints. What’s left standing are the residual towers — fenglin, “peak forest” — and beneath them a honeycomb of caves and underground rivers.
It’s the textbook example of tower karst, and it exists at this scale in only a handful of places worldwide.
Where to actually go
Xingping, not Guilin. The famous view — the 20-yuan panorama — is a twenty-minute walk from Xingping village, and the village itself is a fraction of the size of Yangshuo town. Stay here if quiet matters.
The Yulong river, not the Li. The Li river cruise from Guilin is the standard product and involves a great many large boats. The Yulong is a tributary near Yangshuo, small, shallow, and worked by two-person bamboo rafts. Better scenery, one-tenth the traffic.
A bicycle, not a bus. Yangshuo’s back lanes through the paddy fields are flat, quiet, and take you between villages with towers on both sides. Half a day on a bike is the single best thing to do here.

Climbing
Worth flagging separately: Yangshuo is China’s premier sport-climbing destination, and one of the better ones in Asia. Hundreds of bolted routes on immaculate limestone across dozens of crags, a well-established local scene, gear rental and guiding in town, and a climate that works from autumn through spring.
If you climb, budget more days than you planned.
The Longji terraces
Two hours north in Longsheng, the Longji (“dragon’s backbone”) rice terraces are a separate trip and worth one. Terraced hillsides worked by Zhuang and Yao communities, with the Red Yao villages known for hair kept at floor length.
Best flooded (April–June) or gold (September–October).
People
Guangxi is the Zhuang homeland — the largest ethnic minority in China at nearly 18 million — with Yao and Miao communities in the hills. See our ethnic groups guide. The markets in the smaller towns are where this is most visible, and they rotate on a local schedule.
Practical notes
Getting there: high-speed rail to Guilin or Yangshuo from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Nanning and beyond. Guilin has an international airport.
When: April to October for green paddy and full rivers; September to November for the clearest air and best light. Winter is misty, cool and atmospheric with low water. Avoid national holidays, seriously.
Where to sleep: Xingping or a Yulong river guesthouse over Yangshuo’s West Street, which is a bar strip.
Elsewhere in Guangxi: Detian waterfall on the Vietnamese border, the Leye sinkholes, and Liuzhou for the food.
