Dandong — Looking Into North Korea Across a River

Dandong in Liaoning is the largest city on China’s border with North Korea, and it sits directly across the Yalu river from Sinuiju. At its narrowest the water is a few hundred metres wide.

The view is the reason people come, and it is genuinely arresting — not because anything dramatic is happening, but because of the contrast. On the Chinese bank: high-rise apartments, LED advertising, riverside promenade, traffic. On the other: low buildings, very few vehicles, fields worked with ox and hand tools, and at night, almost no lights.

What there is to see

The Broken Bridge (鸭绿江断桥) — a steel bridge across the Yalu, bombed by US aircraft in 1950 during the Korean War and never rebuilt. You can walk out to the point where it stops, mid-river, and look at the twisted end of it and across to the far bank. It is the most affecting thing in the city, and it doubles as a memorial.

Beside it, the Friendship Bridge carries the road and rail crossing that still operates.

Boat trips run along the river and get closer to the North Korean bank than you’d expect — close enough to see people, and to wave, which happens.

Being thoughtful about it

Worth saying plainly: the people on the other bank are living under conditions they did not choose and cannot leave, and they are aware of being looked at.

The tone that seems right is curiosity without spectacle. Look, think about it, don’t treat it as entertainment, and don’t photograph individuals across the water with a long lens.

Local residents in Dandong tend to talk about the other side with something closer to sympathy than judgement — a lot of families here have Korean roots, and cross-border trade and relationships have been continuous for a long time.

Eating

Dandong has excellent Korean food — cold noodles, grilled meat, kimchi, seafood off the Yellow Sea — and a number of North Korean-run restaurants with performances, which are an experience of their own kind.

Practical notes

Getting there: high-speed rail from Shenyang (about 90 minutes) and direct trains from Beijing. Dandong has an airport.

When: May to October. Autumn is the best season; winter is very cold and the river partially freezes, which is its own sight.

Border rules: Dandong city and the riverfront are open. Some rural stretches of the frontier are restricted, and wandering along the border away from town is not a good idea — see restricted areas.
